About location:
Sumartin is a picturesque town situated in one of the coves of the south-eastern side of beautiful island of Brac. The port of Sumartin (previously called Vrhbrac) was founded by refugees running from Turks from the Makarska coastline who landed there in 1646. They dedicated themselves to fishing, sailing and shipbuilding (there is a small shipyard still active in the town). The foundations of the Franciscan monastery – at the place where the medieval church of St. Martin was, after which Sumartin got its name – were placed in 1747 by a well known Dalmatian poet, fra Andrija Kacic – Miosic. Ferry boat connections from Makarska. Alternatively, there are ferry boat connections from Split to Supetar (Brac island) where the journey may be continued by car or public transport (extensive network of bus lines accross the island).
